Highlands NC

Highlands NC is a unique mountain resort town.  It's beautiful and off to itself. (It does have a nearby fraternal twin in Cashiers.)

There are a large number of part time residents and ample lodging and activities for those visiting for a few days to a couple of weeks.

This combination of seasonal residents and visitors brings a unique mixture of activities and attractions to Highlands.

Weather and Waterfalls

Highlands NC is in a temperate rainforest. Average annual rainfall is around 100 inches. This is more than double most of the surrounding lowlands. Essentially, the Highlands NC area is the first high mountains that air coming from the south hits. The mountain forces the air to rise. As it rises, the air cools. Moisture in the air condenses. Rain falls.

It certainly doesn't rain all of the time. And, the combination of rainfall and mountains creates a number of beautiful waterfalls.
